President's Perspective

President’s Perspective

As 2009 winds down I am proud to say Local 369 has been true to our Strategic Plan and our National’s directives as well. We have negotiated good contracts in difficult times. We have consolidated some smaller Locals into 369, thereby raising the bar of all our contracts. We welcomed Locals 343 of NGrid Gas, 480 of Mirant Canal Power Station and 431 of Fall River Gas. All of these Locals are an asset to Local 369. All have a tradition of standing up for their members’ rights and with the help and support of the members of Local 369, representation will only get better and better.

Welcome to New England Gas

November 18th Dan Hurley and I met with a large contingent of members from New England Gas of Fall River. It was a pleasure to welcome these gas workers with a long history of successes to our 369 family. New England Gas under the leadership of their President Pat Walsh, voted by a wide margin to join Local 369. Dan, and I presented a brief presentation on the steps Local 369 undertakes to prepare for contract bargaining. New England Gas collective bargaining agreement expires on May 1st 2010. We will work toward and we all look forward to a successful successor contract in May 2010.

Exec. Vice President

COPE Report

I would like to thank the Cope Committee for leading Local 369 to be the first union to, once again, endorse, Martha Coakley, the winning candidate in the Democratic primary to be the next United States Senator. This was a unanimous choice by your COPE Committee. Martha is the candidate you know you can count on to work hard on behalf of working families. Her record, fighting for Utility Workers, as Attorney General, is unparalleled. We all know replacing the late Senator Kennedy is a difficult task for any candidate, but we are confident the best person for the job is Martha Coakley.

In 2009, District 2 successfully negotiated one contract, one contract extension, and several memorandums of agreements. We also fought management with numerous arbitrations. This success was accomplished through strong member participation and strategic planning.

Secretary-Treasurer

For Your Benefit

After meeting with many of our new members, I thought it would be helpful to explain some of the duties the Secretary-Treasurer’s Office is responsible for. When I talk of new members, I am not only referring to the new hires, I am also referring to the members who are new to Local 369 as a result of the mergers that have taken place. In fact, the latest group to merge with Local 369 is Local 341. Welcome to Local 369!

When all is said and done 2009 will be a year to remember for numerous reasons. From contract extensions at NSTAR and National Grid, to tough economic times for both Maverick & ElecComm. Even with all of these challenges, Local 369 remained strong and focused. This is truly a credit to the support and direction set forth by our membership.
